AME Zion missionaries worked actively among North Carolina’s newly freed black population after the Civil War. Clinton Chapel, founded in 1865, ranked among the first African American churches in the Charlotte area. The large brick structure was Third Ward’s most visible landmark in Bearden’s youth.
