Dr. James A. Pethel was part of a strong tradition of Mecklenburg-based African American physicians, a tradition that stretches back to Dr. J. T. WIlliams' arrival in 1886. Dr. Pethel practiced medicine in Charlotte 1904 to 1950. On September 2, 1911, Dr. James A. Pethel delivered Romare Bearden in a home birth at 401 S. Graham St.
