Pinewood Cemetery

Bearden biographical
9th St. and Seaboard St.
Pinewood Cemetery was the segregated African American adjunct to white Elmwood Cemetery.

Most of Romare Bearden's family was laid to rest in this cemetery. Biographer Myron Schwartzman recounts one of Romare's visits to this cemetery in 1980, where he is quoted as saying, "It's all down under the earth here--that's Charlotte."
